What is Percussion Window Sampling?

A window sampler is a steel tube usually 1 or 2 metres long with a series of windows cut in the tube through which to view or take samples of the soil sampled. The sampler is driven into the ground by a percussion hammer and extracted using manual or hydraulic jacks.

Samplers come in a range diameters. In practice the largest is driven inot the ground, withdrawn and a smaller diameter sampler is used to sample the soilat the bottom of the hole left by the base of the first sampler. This sequence is repeated using progressively smaller diameter.

Percussion Window Sampling

  • Percussion sampling systems are used widely for general site and foundation investigation, subsidence investigation, railway investigation, contaminated land assessment and gas and ground water monitoring. Suitable ground conditions include, sand, finer gravels, glacial tills and made ground above and below thewater table.

Window Sampling: Applications

  • Ground profiling in clays, sand and gravels.
  • Disturbed and undisturbed sample recovery.
  • Prospecting for sand and mineral deposites.
  • Probing ie. Locating competent bearing stratum beneath weak alluvium,
    peat or made ground.
  • General site and foundation investigation.
  • Subsidence investigation and railway investigation.
  • Contaminated land assessment including airfields and petrol stations.
  • Gas and groundwater monitoring.
  • Used in combination with widely spaced boreholes to provide
    increased site coverage.
  • Teaching, including the fields of engineering geology, environmental
geotechnics, waste management and contaminated land assessment.
  • Archaeological Surveys.
